Papers, 1835-1883.

Papers comprised chiefly of correspondence between Elliot Cowdin and his wife, Kate, that concerns mostly personal and family matters. Many of Elliot's letters also discuss his travels at home and abroad. Some of his letters written in 1870-1871 described the Siege of Paris by Prussian troops. Other family correspondence include several letters Kate Cowdin sent to her parents and siblings regarding her experiences of living in Paris and her travels in Europe. Personal papers include letters, invitations, and honoraria related to Cowdin's involvement in various civic organization and social clubs. Cowdin's papers related to his service in the New York State Assembly include correspondence, drafts of legislation, and notes and drafts of speeches.

Born in Jamaica Vermont. Entered business in Boston during the 1840's, where he mastered the intricacies of silk trade. In the 1850's, he established his own firm in New York York City with a branch in Paris, and lived alternately in one place or the other. He married Sarah Kate Waldron, circa 1853.
